NFC: the photograph you tap

lineage: Sacred Tree (NTAG215 floor inlays · third authorship)

An NFC tag stores nothing but a URL. When a phone touches it, the browser opens ar.html?work=<slug>. The intelligence is in the web page; the tag is only a door handle. This is why the work needs no app.

Conceptually: in Sacred Tree, visitors tapped the inlays with their hands, not their phones, and the "failure" became the work. Design your tag placement knowing people will touch it wrong, and decide what that misunderstanding means.

experiments to try
  1. Write the same work to two tags and hide them in different places. Does location change the meaning of identical content?
  2. Mount a tag behind the printed photograph so the print itself is tapped. The photo becomes both marker and switch.
  3. Watch three visitors who have never used NFC. Write down exactly what they do with their hands before it works. That gap is material.
