experiment 03 · direction

Compass: the body as a dial

lineage: geloracompass · obangsaek directions (east/wood, south/fire, center/earth, west/metal, north/water)

Device orientation gives us the phone's heading. Asking a visitor to face a direction before a work opens makes their whole body part of the interface, and quietly imports a cosmology: in five phase theory, each direction has a color, an element, a season.

experiments to try
  1. Map the five obangsaek directions to five photographs. The visitor turns in place and the gallery rearranges around their body.
  2. Set tolerance to 3°. How does precision change the visitor's posture and patience? At what number does ritual become frustration?
  3. Combine with experiment 02: a work that opens only at one place, facing one way. A photograph as a summoning condition.
